Ulay | Lips of Thomas (Galerie Krinzinger 1975 performance with Marina Abramovic, Innsbruck, Austria), 1975
Polaroid
Description
Lips of Thomas (1975) is a landmark performance by Marina Abramović, first executed at Galerie Krinzinger in Innsbruck. In this work, Abramović explored the limits of physical pain, religious symbolism, and national identity through a series of ritualistic actions. The performance included eating a kilo of honey, drinking a liter of red wine, breaking a glass with her hand, and most famously, carving a five-pointed star (the pentagram) into her abdomen with a razor blade. This print is signed by Ulay, who often acted as the primary documentarian of Abramović's solo works before and during the early years of their partnership.
