Neural Decay is a series of six unique prints on stainless steel by AI-art pioneer Mario Klingemann. Blending historical portraiture with machine intelligence, these works evoke eerie, otherworldly studio photographs of non-human figures. Klingemann created them by chaining custom generative adversarial networks (GANs), transforming early 20th-century yearbook faces into doll-like features before applying "transhancement" models of photographic and organic decay. First exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2020, Neural Decay stands as a defining example of "Neuralism": art created through artificial neural networks.
