LIVES AND WORKS IN GERMANY
Robert Weiland is a Potsdam-based visual artist and photographer whose practice explores the boundaries between craftsmanship, technology, and perception. Informed by backgrounds in graphic design, cinematography, and architecture, Weiland’s work is deeply influenced by a structural understanding of space and proportion. His transition from architecture to painting, and ultimately to a hybrid of analog and digital photography, reflects a commitment to "seeing" before the moment passes. For Weiland, the camera is a tool for decision-making, where the deliberate slowness of film sharpens the gaze and forces a definitive engagement with the subject.
In his series Morgensonne, Weiland investigates direct sunlight as a primary subject rather than a mere light source. Captured in the fleeting minutes following sunrise through morning mist, the images are shot entirely on analog film using a Nikon F. This project emphasizes the physical tangibility of light rays as they structure the pictorial space and highlight the transience of the moment. Eschewing AI-driven processing, Weiland bridges the analog and digital worlds by scanning his negatives and meticulously editing them by hand. The final works are realized as carbon pigment prints, granting a lasting material form to a fragile, ephemeral origin.
Weiland’s career is distinguished by a diverse exhibition history and a commitment to art as a social practice. His work has been exhibited at the KunstHalle der Deutschen Bank in Berlin, the Museum Modern Art Hünfeld, and internationally at the Armory Artweek in New York. Since 2011, he has been a consistent presence in the Potsdam art scene, operating from his studio in the Thiede Werkstätten. Beyond his personal practice, Weiland has dedicated years to arts education and the exploration of high-end analog restoration, constantly seeking to reconcile technical mastery with deep observation.
