In his winter-clad triptych, Ahlgrim captures the architectural legacy of the Haus des Lehrers near Alexanderplatz. He centers on a structure that once served as the intellectual heart of East German pedagogy, housing one of Europe's most significant educational libraries.
The central panel highlights Walter Womacka’s sprawling mosaic frieze, ""Unser Leben."" Though one of Europe's largest artworks, it is easily overlooked in the contemporary urban setting. Adjacent is the aluminum-domed former Kongresshalle (now the bcc), a mid-century modernist venue designed by Hermann Henselmann in the 1960s.
Today, the renovated high-rise functions as modern commercial office space.
The photograph captures the endurance of complex historical identities, revealing how contemporary urban rhythms persist beneath the lingering influence of a bygone ideological past.
