Pierre-Yves Cruaud ist ein französischer bildender Künstler mit einem Hintergrund in Filmstudien, die er von 1993 bis 1996 absolvierte. Im Mittelpunkt seiner künstlerischen Praxis steht das Standbild als Raum für imaginäre und sensorische Erkundungen. Anstatt die Welt so abzubilden, wie sie erscheint, versucht Cruaud, sie so darzustellen, wie er sie sich vorstellt - er nutzt die Fotografie, um innere Erfahrungen und emotionale Landschaften zu evozieren.

Seine Bilder sind von einer minimalistischen Theatralik geprägt, die den Realismus herausfordert. Sorgfältig inszeniert und doch rätselhaft, laden sie den Betrachter ein, sich mit der Szene zu identifizieren, während sie gleichzeitig die Erwartungen verunsichern. Cruauds Arbeiten kreisen oft um das Konzept der Metamorphose - eine wiederkehrende Metapher für Transformation, Unsicherheit und psychologische Tiefe. Seine Fotografien suggerieren Momente, die zwischen den Zuständen schweben, in denen das Vertraute fremd wird und das Statische dynamisch wird.

In seiner jüngsten Serie In the Folds of the Night (In den Falten der Nacht) erforscht Cruaud die Idee einer Welt, die in der Dunkelheit gefangen ist, ein metaphorisches Gefängnis, das von fragmentierten Körpern, gefällten Bäumen und zerbrochenen Formen bewohnt wird. Diese Bewohner sind zwar unbeweglich, scheinen aber - ängstlich oder still - auf eine Verwandlung zu warten. Die Serie spiegelt sein anhaltendes Interesse an den Abwehrmechanismen der Psyche und der existentiellen Stille vor der Veränderung wider.

Acht Bilder aus In the Folds of the Night wurden für den BBA-Fotopreis ausgewählt und waren zuvor in einer von HeeJung Kim kuratierten Einzelausstellung im DongGang Museum of Photography in Südkorea im Jahr 2024 zu sehen.
