Thomas Whitworth | Constructed Scenarios (Sheep Problem)

Archival pigment print 30 3/10 × 20 1/10 × 2 in | 77 × 51 × 5 cm with frame included

Description

The Constructed Scenarios series displays scenes of apparent problems or dilemmas. These still lifes are built using HO scale model train figures, vehicles, structures, and lights. The backgrounds are 20”x30” photographs of actual skies and landscapes. I position the objects, backgrounds, and lighting to blend the 2D and 3D together visually—this is done in-camera, not by Photoshop collage afterwards. Like cinema, this work utilizes sets, actors, props, lighting, and backdrops to form a narrative. The tableaus are specific enough to be familiar, but not so realistic as to be convincing illusions—their manufactured errors are often revealed. Wry and ironic, they are meant to be both amusing and troubling. Their dualities present both story and still life, photographic reality and theatrical performance, small scale illusion and real world mimic. Ultimately, they depict multiple layers of the real and unreal, a territory of questions and illusion that photography inherently manifests.
