Part of a series of digital paintings executed as embroidery. The dynamic gesture of the computer mouse explored in my approach to digital painting is now mirrored in the hand that embroiders, markedly slowed, in a meditative process of transposition. The Aida cloths grid structure makes this transposition nearly seamless. Yet within the constraints of the grid is space to explore a range of material choices: type of stitch, fibers, weights, and colors, all adding dimension, texture, and warmth to the handcrafted image-object. If there exists some hierarchy within the textile arts, cross stitch embroidery might be considered one of the lower constituents often consigned to the hobby-realm. It is therefore not without some irony that I present these works stretched on canvas frames, asserting them within the domain of painting(historically privileged as the highest art).
