"I'm originally from Poland and have been living in Berlin for 10 years. I was a good student and trained as a landscape designer, then worked in the field for several years. Then I started partying. I tried heroin and quickly became addicted. I lost everything, my job and relationships, and lived on the streets for a long time. Now I'm dealing with crack and also take methadone maintenance therapy daily.
I'm currently surviving as a street worker and trying to get back to normal life. Although I cannot say what it should look like. To be honest I don't remember what it was like. Have I ever had one?
There's nothing extra in my bag. Papers from the Job Center (German employment agency), tobacco, some syringes. My mother gave me this keychain with a red heart 10 years ago. It's very dirty, but that's okay; it can probably be washed off someday.
I always have a lot of coins; sometimes passersby give me a few cents, and there's a broken lighter that I should have thrown away, but I always forget as it’s stuck somewhere on the bottom."
