Offering is the third piece in a series of porcelain sculpture-based installations and research, created by Hartwig in Berlin over the past two years. Offering consists of intricately crafted porcelain sculptures and functional ware, intentionally arranged on a long ceremonial table. Hartwig's use and presentation of sculpture made from "white gold" taps into porcelain's rich heritage, history, and cultural importance in Germany. As a contemporary German-American visual artist, she investigates porcelain in both sculptural and functional contexts, as well as conceptually. This approach enables a thorough examination of this historically significant medium, which carries meaning on both global and local levels. Hartwig's work pays tribute to the cultural value and politics of porcelain, while establishing a new value system and recontextualising it in personal and socio-cultural contexts.
