While photographing the flora and fauna in nature, I am also constantly coming across clouds, fog, smoke, and vapor—things that are known as “aerosol suspensions”. I find it interesting that these things can be indicators of our environment, even warnings. Some clouds indicate impending storms or temperature gradients, while other smoke and vapors might be poisonous chemicals or merely water. I’ve taken to printing on vellum and gilding with precious metals, in this case, with 24k gold leaf. This process pays homage to the precarious and fragile nature of the subject by employing the hand-applied materials. These visuals can be stunning, they can be warnings, they can be celebrations. By bringing them together on my palette, I hope to elevate their presence and spark a conversation. With this image “Meeting Our Needs”, you can see the coal burning plants of Ordos across the dunes of the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia, China.
