In The War of Giants, Ma Dongli transforms the tabletop battlefield into a metaphorical arena of power and destruction. Rows of identical toy soldiers stand in dense formations, stripped of individuality and reduced to symbols of obedience within systems of control.
Beneath this apparent order lies a deeper tension: violence often operates through rational structures. Across the surface, colossal traces—shoe prints, tire tracks, and bullet marks—appear as overwhelming forces. To the miniature soldiers, these marks become catastrophic events, caused by entities so vast they resemble giants.
Through this shift in scale, Ma reframes proportion as a political metaphor. The viewer, positioned above the scene, assumes the role of the giant, confronting their own complicity within systems of domination.
