In his triptych Winterhafen, Berlin photographer Dirk Ahlgrim examines the layered history of the Osthafen on the River Spree. Ahlgrim anchors his focus on a site that transitioned from a bustling commercial harbor into an East German border control checkpoint during the Cold War.
The subjects presented are the checkpoint's remaining pier and the ""Dr. Ingrid Wengler."" In the wake of reunification, this vessel briefly hosted luxury river cruises. Yet, following a failed entrepreneurial endeavor and protracted legal battles, the ship was towed to this final resting place in the mid-1990s.
Today, after decades of profound negligence, the site stands on the precipice of renewal. Current plans aim to transform this location into a museum, permanently preserving the complex commercial and political narratives of Berlin’s waterways.
