In an era of technical reproducibility, Anna Vonnemann experiments with manual reproduction, with self-copying. What fascinates her is the difference, the subtle variation, and the fact that there will always be a difference. And that difference is significant. Just as the ancient philosopher Heraclitus stated that one can never step into the same river twice, and the French semiotician and literary philosopher Roland Barthes noted that every re-reading of a text creates a new, different realization, Anna Vonnemann’s repetitions of subjects point to this phenomenon: the inherent impossibility of exact repetition and the moment-bound nature of our existence.
