Eric Rugers is a Netherlands-based abstract artist whose practice operates at the delicate intersection of painting and photography. After decades of working with precision and representation, his current work marks a departure toward a process where craftsmanship remains, but rigid control is relinquished. Rugers explores the boundary between presence and disappearance, utilizing layered surfaces, color, and light to investigate the fragile threshold between what is seen and what is felt. His work does not aim to depict or explain; instead, it lingers in the moment before meaning settles, allowing the image to "breathe" through its resistance to being fixed.

In his series Interval, Rugers explores the space between presence and absence—where an image begins to dissolve and something else takes its place. These works do not function as traditional depictions but as suggestions, where forms emerge, shift, and disappear to invite a state of slow looking. Rooted in a hybrid process that blends painted textures with photographic exploration, the series investigates transformation and memory. By focusing on what refuses to resolve, Rugers creates unstable compositions that are neither fully abstract nor fully figurative, shifting the viewer’s focus from the visible to the evocative.

Rugers’ career is distinguished by international recognition and a unique cross-disciplinary approach. His work has been acquired by the Museum of Avant-garde in Switzerland and he was a finalist for both the Antanas Sutkus and Graciela Iturbide MA-g Awards. In 2025, he received the Silver Prize in the ArtAscent international Abstraction competition. A frequent participant in the Amsterdam art scene, including the NOCKNOCK Art Fair and the Hungry Eye Fair, his practice continues to be featured in contemporary dialogues, such as his interview "The Door to Resonance" in The Ambrosia Journal.
