ABOUT THE ARTIST
BORN IN RUSSIA
LIVES AND WORKS IN GERMANY
Yulia Ani is a visual artist who lives and works in Berlin. She is an artist who always raises a question about the nature of image-making, authorship, and the remaining human presence in the digital age, based on abstract painting.
Her latest practice, “Human Layer,” is an exploration of the tension between anonymously generated images and abstraction as a direct form of human expression. From her recent methodology—utilizing AI models to create apocalyptic landscapes, printing them on canvas or paper, and then painting abstract compositions over them—the artist tries to bring the interplay of technology and intuition back to our reality. The desolation of the synthetic landscapes, marked by traces of human presence, is continuously confronted with her expressive, painterly gestures. She describes her work as a space where the accumulated visual memory of humanity buried within algorithms is given a new, emotional intensity through the immediacy of color and form. Her work is rooted in the balance between spontaneity and control, merging algorithmic imagery within the form of intuitive abstract painting.
Ani has exhibited her work extensively in Germany and internationally. She has been invited to exhibitions and collaborations at Bethanien Studio 1, Galerie Grolman, SLP Gallery, Haze Gallery, New & Abstract Gallery, the Every Woman Biennial at Copeland Gallery in London, as well as the Discovery Art Fair Frankfurt and many other exhibitions.
