ABOUT THE ARTIST

BORN IN GERMANY

LIVES AND WORKS IN GERMANY

Elvira Flamm is a visual artist who studied painting at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and currently lives and works in Berlin. She is an artist who always raises a question about the tension field between nature and culture, our collective spiritual baggage, and the perception of reality, based on experimental and process-led painting techniques.

Her latest practice, “Ikonen ohne Namen” (Icons without names), is an exploration of the anonymity and abstraction imposed upon society by mass media. From her recent methodology—deconstructing media imagery of global crises and mimicking the visual language of digital pixelation—the artist tries to bring these fleeting impressions and anonymous shadows of reality back to our awareness. The emotional distance created by digital media is continuously confronted with her delicate balance between figurative representation and total abstraction. Influenced by her formative 16 years of living in the tropics, she describes her work as a space of dialogue where the flood of information is questioned and the unplanned allows a new dimension to emerge. Her work is rooted in a journey back to the essential and universal core of life, merging conceptual exploration within the form of varied, alchemical mediums.

Flamm’s career is marked by extensive international recognition. She has been invited to exhibitions and collaborations at prominent venues including Lite-Haus Galerie and Chromart Project Space in Berlin, the Centro Culturale di Milano and Musèo Arte e Scienza in Milan, Galleria Biblioteca Angelica in Rome, as well as major art spaces in Florence, Venice, London, and Barcelona.
